About this SPEAKER

Dr. Amlan Mukherjee is a Professor in Civil, Environmental and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He has been involved with construction research and education community for over twenty years. His research interests have primarily been in studying civil infrastructure systems through the lens of risk and life cycle analysis, to improve project outcomes such as project cost, performance and environmental impacts. He has extensive background and experience in project management and life cycle assessment for the pavement construction industry. He has also been involved in entrepreneurial efforts that apply innovation in information technologies and data management to civil infrastructure systems. The outcomes of his research supports efficient and sustainable decision-making during the design, construction and maintenance of civil infrastructure systems. He works closely with the construction materials industry, and federal and state agencies in ensuring the dissemination and application of his research in design, procurement and construction.

In the area of sustainability, Dr. Mukherjee has facilitated the development and implementation of the Environmental Product Development Program for the North American asphalt mixtures working for the National Asphalt Pavement Association. He also serves on the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) Sustainable Pavements Technical Working Group, and closely collaborates with the Federal Life Cycle Assessment Commons to ensure the consistent and reliable use of life cycle inventories, and how it could inform construction procurement practices. He has also worked in developing guidelines for sustainable highway construction practices. This research has implications in pavement design and construction practices as well as in informing public procurement practices in transportation construction.

Dr. Mukherjee is a member of the Transportation Research Board standing committee on Construction Management (AKC10). He has been a principal or co-principal investigator in research funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Cooperative for Highway Research Programs (NCHRP), Department of Education, DARPA, and Michigan and Minnesota Departments of Transportation.
